Tulsa Football Team Hits the Field For First Spring Practice
March 8, 2011
Tulsa, Oklahoma - The Tulsa Golden Hurricane football team practiced on Tuesday for the first time under Head Coach Bill Blankenship. It was the first spring workout for the Hurricane. Tulsa will practice again on Thursday before taking next week off for Spring Break.
Blankenship was happy with the first spring session, but indicated that the Hurricane team has to work faster.
"It went way too fast and our guys didn't work fast enough. We want to work faster. We are a no-huddle team and we are trying to keep that tempo going. I think overall I was happy, but we have to work faster," said Blankenship.
The head coach was asked that is it ever fast enough. "Probably not. Everybody is trying to learn the language. Every guy that has a new coach is trying to figure him out and right now we are looking around too much and we need to work faster. There is no shortcut to experience, you just have to do it. Now we have one practice in and the next one will be a whole lot better," added Blankenship.
The Hurricane returns 51 lettermen from the nation's 24th-ranked team of a year ago. Tulsa has 19 starters returning from last year's 10-3 team with 10 back on offense, eight on defense and one kicker.
"I am excited about the guys we have. The players we have make it so I am able to sleep at night. We have a veteran bunch that knows how to battle and come out successful. I think the transition is still in place, but for me I feel like I am three steps ahead because I know these guys," said Blankenship.
