FANS INVITED ON THE FIELD DURING SPRING GAME
April 1, 2013
Tulsa, Oklahoma - The University of Tulsa's Annual Spring Football Game is scheduled for this Saturday at H.A. Chapman Stadium at 1:00 p.m.
The game will take a different format this year, as the Golden Hurricane team will scrimmage on the south 50 yards, while fans will be invited to bring lounge chairs and blankets and sit on the north 40 yards. Head Coach Bill Blankenship will be interactive during the scrimmage by conducting contests -- throw a pass to TU receivers, catch a pass from TU quarterbacks, kick a field goal -- and inviting fans to call plays.
There is no admission fee to the game.
At 12 noon, a special ceremony will celebrate the life and legacy of a true TU legend with the unveiling of the Glenn Dobbs statue. The celebration will take place on Glenn Dobbs Drive (8th Street) just outside the north gates of Chapman Stadium.
Dobbs was an All-America tailback and three-time all-Missouri Valley Conference performer, who led Tulsa to a Sun Bowl victory on January 1, 1942 and to a Sugar Bowl appearance the next season. He led Tulsa in passing, pass efficiency and punting in both 1941 and `42, and had the nation's best punting average in 1942 with a 48.3 average.
After excelling in professional football as an All-Pro halfback, Dobbs returned to his alma mater in 1961 to take the position of head coach. He revitalized Tulsa's passing attack and led the team to 1964 and `65 Bluebonnet Bowl appearances, as well as five consecutive NCAA passing titles (1962-66). Dobbs was elected to the TU Athletic Hall of Fame, the Helms Foundation Hall of Fame and the National College Football Hall of Fame.
