Blue Dominates Gold in Tulsa Spring Game 42-0
April 7, 2012
Tulsa, Oklahoma - The Blue scored six touchdowns for a 42-0 victory over the Gold team in the Annual Tulsa Spring Football Game Saturday afternoon at H.A. Chapman Stadium. (the Blue Team wore Blue helmets and White uniforms, while the Gold Team wore Gold helmets with Red jerseys and Gold pants) Head Coach Bill Blankenship was pleased with the way the entire spring practice has gone, as well as how well the spring game went today. "I was pleased with the format of how it turned out. We got a little sidetracked with the weather early. We separated the teams where we had the first units working together, instead of working against each other for a change. I thought they were both very effective," said Blankenship. "We didn't give up any points from the first team defenses standpoint and generated a couple of turnovers. Offensively, I was very pleased except for the one turnover going down into the end zone. I thought we moved the ball very efficiently. The guys we hoped would play well, played well. I was pleased to see Keyarris (Garrett) get his big run for a touchdown after the catch. He's a guy that can really help us spread the ball around with Bernie (Bryan Burnham) and Jordan (James), and that was a key to see him do it in a game situation." The Blue team took the opening drive 75 yards in nine plays as Cody threw a five-yard scoring strike to Willie Carter. Following that opening drive, play was stopped due to sever weather in the area, forcing the Golden Hurricane team into the locker room. After a 37-minute delay, play resumed with the Blue team going 69 yards in nine plays as Kalen Henderson threw the final 11 yards to Jordan James. The Gold team took the subsequent possession 29 yards to the Blue 476-yard line before J.D. Ratliff intercepted a Dane Evans pass. On the very next play, Green hit Keyarris Garrett down the sideline for a 67-yard pass play for the Blue Team's third touchdown. The Gold Team went 3-and-out on its' next two possessions, while the Blue team went five plays for only seven yards. The Blue team then went 55 yards in eight plays as Ja'Terian Douglas rushed the final four yards for the Blue team's fourth TD of the game. The Gold Team then put together its longest drive of the day, covering 48 yards in 13 plays, but could not find the end zone. Green then connected on his third TD pass of the game with a 52-yarder to Bryan Burnham. Trey Watts added the Blue Team's final touchdown on a 12-yard TD run, capping a four-play, 36-yard drive. The big question going into spring practice was who would take over the quarterbacking duties from the graduated G.J. Kinne. Blankenship has not named a starter at this point. "Honestly, they both have performed very well all spring. The thing that will get lost in the translation is Cody had the better day today, there's no question. But, all the decisions have to be made based on what we've seen in the whole body of work. I've been very happy with the way Kalen has played this spring. He has had a few better days than Cody did, but today clearly went to Cody," said Blankenship. "I think both of these guys can help us win a conference championship."
