Tulsa's Bunting Named to 2005 Chuck Bednarik Award Watch List
July 7, 2005
Tulsa, Oklahoma - University of Tulsa linebacker Nick Bunting was one of 49 players named to the preliminary 2005 Chuck Bednarik Award Watch List, which honors the nation's Most Outstanding Defensive Player of the Year.
Bunting, a 6-1, 230-pound junior from Tulsa's Holland Hall High School, earned all-Western Athletic Conference in his first two seasons. As a true freshman in 2003, Bunting was named the WAC Freshman of the Year and also earned first-team all-conference merits. He was a second-team all-WAC selection in 2004. He was also named to the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) Freshman All-America Team during the 2003 campaign.
A two-year starter, Bunting has started 23 of 25 games and has career totals of 167 tackles and 12 stops for -44 yards. He was second on the team last year with 88 tackles and had a season-best 12 stops in two games.
Bunting is the only Conference USA player as well as the only player from a school in the state of Oklahoma to make the preseason Chuck Bednarik Award list.
Players selected to the initial watch list have distinguished themselves as all-conference or All-America selections from their respective universities in past years. Underclassmen are selected based on recommendations from the Maxwell Football Club Advisory Committee.
The semifinalists for the award will be announced in October 2005 and the field will be trimmed to three finalists in November 2005. The winners will be announced at the Home Depot College Football Awards Show that will be broadcast on ESPN in December 2005.
