DAY 3 REPORT: Tulsa Puts on Pads for First Time Monday
Aug. 4, 2014
Tulsa, Oklahoma - On the day that the Tulsa football team met the media at the school's Annual Football Media Day, the Golden Hurricane had its third practice with a two-hour workout Monday morning at Harwell Field.
Head Coach Bill Blankenship came away pleased with the first day in shoulder pads and helmets.
"The first day in pads always changes the whole practice mentality. For the first time you actually see if you can block, hit and be physical," said Blankenship. "In the early part of practice we had our `Tulsa Tough' drill, which is a one-on-one drill with a blocker and running back against a defender. That really set the tone for the entire practice."
"I thought we had a really, really good day - a balance of good offensive big plays, and then certain segments the defense completely dominated. I thought we saw a good give-and-take, and that's what you hope for early, but the intensity level was really high," Blankenship said.
"We got what we expected moving into the first day of pads. We saw was that most of our veteran players, players that had played a lot last year, responded really well. Some of the freshmen, who flashed early in shorts, were a little hesitant today, and that's normal. Hopefully, this practice got them through the shock of wearing pads, and even by the end of practice some of the freshmen we're looking better," said Blankenship.
"We looked like a team that has 50 lettermen returning. It was a good approach to the first day in pads," added Blankenship.
