Football Scrimmages Wednesday Night
Aug. 12, 2009
TULSA, Okla. - The University of Tulsa football team held its first scrimmage of the preseason Wednesday, taking yet another big step closer to the beginning of the 2009 season, which begins on Sept. 4.
The full-pad practice under the lights at Skelly Field at H.A. Chapman Stadium provided a quality evaluation period for the coaching staff. The scrimmage featured full game-like situations. The coaches backed off the field and coached from the sidelines, allowing the players to play and show how far they have come in the first week of practice.
"We got lots of good evaluation tonight," Tulsa Head Coach Todd Graham said. "We were pretty basic with what we were doing. We were very cautious, naturally, with a lot of our players, especially offensively. I thought the guys got after it well, competed well, and I was pleased.
"The big thing tonight was that it was the first time we got out here with the speed (of game situations)," said Graham. "The speed is so much faster. The defense made a lot of great plays. I was really pleased defensively, and I thought they did some great things. We've got a lot of big-play capability on offense and we're excited about that.
Graham singled out a couple of players that he said have performed well in the first week of practice, and in the scrimmage on Wednesday. Two of those players were redshirt freshmen, in defensive end Cory Dorris and running back Willie Carter. Graham also said senior defensive back Charles Davis had a strong scrimmage with a pair of interceptions.
"I think Cory Dorris is a guy that really has stuck out to me. Willie Carter had a tremendous scrimmage tonight on offense. He is a very, very explosive guy that's done a great job. But Cory Dorris is a guy who really has a chance to have a breakout year, has come on strong."
Thursday, the team will practice once, in the evening, and also take part in the Tulsa Chamber of Commerce Kickoff Luncheon.
