HURRICANE SPOTLIGHT: SMU HEAD COACH JUNE JONES
Aug. 14, 2014
The two teams are very familiar with each other, having played 20 times in the past. SMU leads the series 13-7, including a 5-4 mark against the Hurricane in Tulsa.
SMU posted a 5-7 record in its first season of play in the American Athletic Conference a year ago, and saw a streak of four consecutive bowl appearances come to an end. The Mustangs return 38 lettermen and 13 starters in 2014. On offense, receiver Darius Johnson ranked second in The American last year for receptions with 103, trailing teammate Jeremy Johnson's total of 112 catches. SMU returns seven starters on defense, though Kevin Pope, who was second on the team in tackles at linebacker in 2013, has moved to running back.
