HURRICANE SPOTLIGHT: MEMPHIS HEAD COACH JUSTIN FUENTE
Aug. 15, 2014
This is a coaching match-up between coach and pupil. Tulsa Head Coach Bill Blankenship tutored Justin Fuente at Union High School, where Blankenship served as head coach and Fuente was his quarterback.
Memphis holds a 14-10 advantage in the series between the two teams that were conference foes in the Missouri Valley Conference and later Conference USA, and now the American Athletic Conference. Tulsa has won the last four meetings in the series, and also since 2005 has won two more games at Liberty Bowl Stadium - the 2005 AutoZone Liberty Bowl against Fresno State and the 2012 Bowl game against Iowa State, giving Tulsa a 4-0 mark at Liberty Bowl Stadium since the 2005 campaign.
Memphis returns the second-most starters of any American Athletic Conference team after posting three wins last year. On offense, Memphis returns its top eight receivers and leading rusher Brandon Hayes, who gained 860 yards in 2013. The Tigers defense ranked 12th nationally in rushing defense a year ago, allowing just 116.3 yards per game.
