TULSA FOOTBALL KICKS OFF SEASON SUNDAY
Sept. 4, 2010
Greenville, NC - Tulsa made the two hour and 30-minute flight to the east coast on Saturday morning arriving in Kinston, North Carolina at 1 pm, and making the 30-minute drive to Greenville.
The Hurricane went through a one-hour walk-thru on the natural grass field at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium at 4:30 pm (ET).
The game between Tulsa and East Carolina will kick-off at 2:05 eastern time on ESPN 2 Sunday afternoon. An expected sell-out crowd of 50,000 fans is expected for the Pirates' home opener under first-year head coach Ruffin McNeill. It will be the first game in the newly expanded stadium as 7,000 seats were added in the end zone.
Tulsa holds a 5-4 edge in the series, but the Pirates have won the last two meetings over the past two seasons, both games in Tulsa. ECU pulled out a 27-24 victory in the 2008 C-USA Championship Game. Last year, ECU had a six-point advantage at the end of the third quarter, but turned three Tulsa turnovers into touchdowns in the fourth period for a 44-17 victory.
Tulsa Head Coach Graham has said repeatedly this week, and said it again following Saturday's walkthrough "we have to take care of the football and not make mistakes and stupid penalties." In the last two games against the Pirates, the Hurricane has turned the ball over 11 times, as compared to two for East Carolina.
This is third straight year that Tulsa has opened the regular season with a Conference USA road game. The Hurricane defeated UAB in 2008 and Tulane in 2009.
The home season for the Golden Hurricane begins next Saturday on Sept. 11th against Bowling Green, as Tulsa will remember 9-11 with a "Salute to America". The home opener begins at 6:05 pm at H.A. Chapman Stadium. Season tickets for the six-game home schedule and Bowling Green tickets are available online at tulsahurricane.com or by calling the TU athletic ticket office at 918-631-GoTU (4688).
