Tulsa's Burns Inks JUCO Transfers to National Letters
Dec. 21, 2000 University of Tulsa signed two junior college football players to national letters-of-intent today, announced Head Football Coach Keith Burns. The two newcomers, defensive backs Don Gibson and Reginald Reese from Southwest Mississippi Community College, will enroll for the second semester and be eligible to participate in spring drills. Gibson and Reese are two of the four starting defensive backs at SWMCC to receive Division I-A scholarships this year. Gibson, a 5-10 cornerback, was a first-team all-Mississippi Junior College Athletic Association all-state performer this past season. He was credited with 82 tackles, including 46 solos, two fumble recoveries, two interceptions and 15 pass breakups. On special teams, Gibson returned kickoffs for a 30.8 yard average and had one kickoff return for a touchdown. He also blocked two kicks. Gibson moved to cornerback for his sophomore season, after splitting time as a starter his freshman season at running back and receiver. Reese is a 5-11 strong safety, who tallied 90 tackles during the 2000 season. He had 52 solos and added seven tackles for lost yardage. Reese was credited with five caused fumbles, three interceptions and five pass breakups. He also blocked four kicks. A two-year starter at strong safety, Reese earned honorable mention MJCAA all-state merits as a sophomore. "Both Don and Reginald will make solid contributions to the Tulsa football program. Don is a great cover corner who brings life to the football program. He works hard every day. He's the type of player that you wish you had 22 of to fill your roster," said SWMCC Head Coach Kenny Edenfield. "Reginald is a big hitter and good tackler. He's an intelligent player and is a leader by example. Reginald loves to make contact and is a solid cover guy as well." "We're excited to have Don and Reggie join our program. They will have an immediate impact on our football team," said Burns. "We've improved our team speed and added to our overall defensive playmaking ability. Having Don and Reggie here during winter workouts and spring practice is extremely valuable."
