Tulsa Men Golfers in 3rd Place at Desert Shootout

Goodyear, Ariz. - Tulsa's Mark Mumford carded a six-under par 66 to lead the Golden Hurricane into third place during first round play at the 54-hole Desert Shootout on Thursday. As a team, Tulsa shot a seven-under par score of 281 at the par-72 Palm Valley Golf Course. BYU leads the 15-team field after shooting a 14-under par 274, followed by second-place San Diego (278), Tulsa (281) and tied for fourth place to round out the top-5 teams are Air Force and Wichita State (283). Tulsa's Chris Worrell also carded an under par round today with a two-under par 70 on the first 18 holes. Worrell sits in a tie for 14th place. Freshman Matt Mabrey shot an even-par 72 and is in a 27th place tie, while sophomore John Young Kim carded a round of 73 for the Hurricane and enters Friday's second round in 37th place. Senior Stephen Carney is in 69th place after shooting a score of four-over par 76 on Thursday. San Diego's Alex Ching leads the field after turning in a score of eight-under par 64, while Tulsa's Mumford is tied with BYU's Zachary Blair for second place at six-under par 66. The Hurricane has two golfers playing as individuals as well, including Cody Kent in 69th place with a score of 76 and Colton Staggs in 89th place after a round of 79 today.
