Tulsa Men Golfers Open Spring Season

Hurricane looking for third straight tournament championship

Feb. 9, 2007

Gainesville, Florida - The Tulsa men's golf team will attempt to make it three straight tournament wins when the Hurricane tee-off the spring season this weekend at the SunTrust Gator Invitational, February 10-11.

Tulsa, ranked 17th nationally, will be a part of a strong field of 14 teams competing for the top prize in one of college golf's first spring tournaments. The teams will play 36 holes at University of Florida Golf Course on Saturday, followed by 18 on Sunday, with action scheduled to commence at 8 a.m. EST on both days.

Host Florida is the nation's top-ranked team, while other top-25 teams include sixth-ranked Coastal Carolina, No. 17 Tulsa and No. 18 Georgia State. Gator Invitational participant Purdue is on the cusp of giving the tournament another ranked member, as the Boilermakers were rated 26th in the most recent poll.

Tulsa won its final two fall tournaments, capturing medalist honors at the Oklahoma Intercollegiate and The Landfall Tradition.

Last year, the Hurricane finished in second-place at the Gator Invitational behind host Florida. Tulsa carded rounds of 287-286-288 for an 861 total, six strokes behind the Gators. Sam Korbe won a playoff last year over Florida senior Brett Stegmaier to win the individual medalist title.

The Hurricane is led by a quartet of senior golfers. In addition to Korbe, fellow seniors are Brett Myers, Mitch Cohlmia and Ryan Henry. Myers had the best stroke average in the fall of 72.7, followed by Korbe's average of 72.8. Cohlmia and freshman Nicolas Geyger tied for first-place at The Landfall Tradition, while Korbe claimed medalist honors at the Oklahoma Intercollegiate.
