Tulsa Men's Soccer Team Falls to SIU-Edwardsville, 3-1
Aug. 27, 2011
Tulsa, Oklahoma -
The University of Tulsa's 29th-ranked men's soccer team dropped a 3-1 decision to SIU-Edwardsville on Saturday night in the season opener at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium. TU fell to 0-1 on the season, while SIUE moved to 1-0.
"I thought we had the start that we wanted," Head Coach Tom McIntosh said. "We moved the ball well and we did a good job in terms of possession. We weren't good upfront at times, but we created enough chances, but we made several individual errors, which was frustrating. I thought we controlled most of the first half. We were disciplined and we didn't panic. We started the second half well, but that second goal was a breaker. We can't give up three goals, so we have to clean up and make some changes, but I think we'll rectify some of those things."
The Cougars got on the board at the 12:33 mark as Jack Twellman punched in a penalty kick for the early lead. Sophomore midfielder James Gulley (Clinton, Miss.) evened the score with just 55 seconds left to play in the first half as he drilled in a pass from freshman Abe Matamoros (Houston, Texas) from 15 yards out on the left side.
SIUE's Peter Kelly got the go-ahead goal within two minutes of the second half and nearly 20 minutes later Twellman headed in his second goal of the night to put the game out of reach.
Tony Rocha (Spring, Texas) attempted nine shots to lead the Golden Hurricane attack. Cody Mumma (Tulsa, Okla.) logged 74:22 in goal and gave up three goals, while Michael Murray (Hickory Creek, Texas) finished out the time in the net.
Tulsa had a 19-6 advantage in shots, but the Cougars had a 3-2 lead in shots on goal. The Golden Hurricane also had a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks.
TU will return to action on Thursday, Sept. 1st at Missouri State. Game time is set for 7:00 pm in Springfield, Mo.
