Aug. 31, 2008
Storrs, Connecticut - The 22nd-ranked Tulsa men's soccer team tied second-ranked UConn, 1-1, on Sunday night at the Joseph J. Morrone Stadium in Storrs, Connecticut. Both teams moved to 1-0-1 on the season.
"I was very pleased with our performance," Head Coach Tom McIntosh said. "After such a short turn-around with playing at home on Friday and here tonight, the guys played with great character, concentration and accountability. We had a good game plan and each player did their job."
Senior Eric DeFreitas punched in a goal at the 14:32 mark. Ashley McInnes passed the ball up the field to freshman Blaine Gonsalves who slotted the ball to DeFreitas who then put it away. This was DeFreitas' first goal of the season and 15th career goal.
TU maintained the one goal lead until the Huskies' O'Brian White tied up the contest with just 2:12 left in regulation, forcing overtime. Both 10-minute overtime periods ticked off the clock without a goal, which left the game in a tie.
The Golden Hurricane had a 21-18 advantage in shots, while UConn posted a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal.
Senior Tyrel Lacey picked up six saves in 110 minutes.
TU returns to action next Friday, Sept. 5th, against Penn State in the Penn State Classic in State College, Pennsylvania. Tulsa will also take on Ohio State in the tournament.
