Tulsa Falls to 4th-Ranked South Florida, 2-1
Sept. 2, 2012
Tulsa, Oklahoma - Abe Matamoros netted a goal for Tulsa, but it wasn't enough as the Golden Hurricane dropped a 2-1 decision to fourth-ranked South Florida on Sunday night in the Hurricane Classic at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium. "After the first 20 minutes, I thought we started to gain control of the game," Head Coach Tom McIntosh said. "Other than the counter-attack in the second half, I thought we controlled a lot of the play and I thought we performed really well. We had a couple defensive lapses and they punished us for them. The margin of victory is slim when you are playing these types of teams, and we will just have to keep growing as a group. The subs came on and played exceptionally well and we showed our depth today." Roberto Alterio put the Bulls on the board at the 51:45 mark as he knocked in a goal from two yards out off a pass from Kevin Olali. Abe Matamoros countered with a goal 20 minutes later as he evened up the score from 45 yards out on the right side. In the 80th minute, Lucas Baldwin gave USF the go-ahead goal as he drilled in a penalty kick for the game-winner. South Florida had a 14-9 lead in shots, including a 9-5 advantage in shots on goal. USF also had a 9-5 lead in corner kicks. Bradley Bourgeois had a team-best two shots, while seven others had a shot in the contest. Mark Pais logged all 90 minutes in goal and picked up seven saves. Tulsa will return to action on Friday, Sept. 7th against UCLA beginning at 6:30 pm on the PAC 12 Network. Scoring Summary Tulsa 0 1 - 1 USF 0 2 - 2
