Sep 6, 2013
Tulsa, Oklahoma -
Tulsa men's soccer coach Tom McIntosh earned his 200th career win with a 4-1 victory over Ohio State on Friday night in the Holiday Inn City Center Golden Hurricane Classic at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium. TU moved to 2-1 on the season, while the Buckeyes fell to 1-2 overall.
"I thought we created some good chances in the first half and scored a couple nice goals to get us to a 2-0 lead," McIntosh said. "I thought we were a little sloppy at the end of the first half and we knew our individual performances had to be better in the second half. We got better in the second half, controlled a lot of the possession and created a number of good chances. It was a good effort by the guys, but we still have to continue to get better."
Cristian Mata scored his first goal of the season off a pass from Akeil Barrett at the 10:58 mark to give TU an early lead. Bryce Follensbee added a goal in the 31st minute with Cristian earning the assist to give the Golden Hurricane a 2-0 lead at the break.
In the second frame, Tony Rocha put one into the back of the net and Barrett picked up his second assist on the night at the 52:01 mark, but Ohio State's Christian Soldat got one back just 57-seconds later as he drilled in a cross from Danny Jensen from five yards out.
In the 67th minute Barrett scored from five yards out off a pass from Kyle Cumings for the final score.
Tulsa had a 25-6 lead in shots, including a 15-2 advantage in shots on goal, and had a narrow 5-4 lead in corner kicks.
Follensbee led the Hurricane attack with seven shots, while Rocha and Cristian each had five shots, and Barrett took three attempts. Cody Mumma logged all 90 minutes in goal.
Tulsa will return to action on Sunday in the final day of the Hurricane Classic. SMU will take on Ohio State at 12 noon, and TU will host SIU-Edwardsville at 2:30 pm.
