Tulsa Men's Soccer Team Shuts Out Loyola Marymount, 3-0

Los Angeles, Calif. - Omar Mata and Cristian Mata led the Tulsa men's soccer team to a 3-0 shutout over Loyola Marymount on Sunday afternoon in Los Angeles, Calif. TU moved to 3-2 on the season, while LMU fell to 1-3-1 overall. "We talked about being better at passing, better at closing down, better at set pieces and better at defending after Friday's game, and I thought the guys took it to heart," Head Coach Tom McIntosh said. "We combined quite well and played a very good game from start to finish." Cristian scored the game-winner as he picked up the ball at the end line, cut back and shot at the 10:33 mark. His brother, Omar, tallied his first goal of the season in the 39th minute as he headed in a cross by Akeil Barrett to give Tulsa a 2-0 lead at the break. Cristian scored his third goal of the season in the 63rd minute as he punched in a goal from eight yards out off a pass from Bryce Follensbee. Both teams had seven shots, while the Golden Hurricane held a 6-2 lead in shots on goal, and the Lions had a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks. The Golden Hurricane was led by Cristian with three shots, while Omar had two attempts. Barrett and Stephen Roberson each had one shot. Mark Pais logged all 90 minute in goal and recorded the shutout. The Golden Hurricane will return to action in the SMU Classic on Friday, Sept. 14th and Sunday, Sept. 16th against UC Davis and Oakland, respectively, in Dallas, Texas.
