Tulsa Men's Soccer Blanks UCF, 2-0, for First Conference USA Victory
Oct. 16, 2005
Tulsa, Oklahoma - Tulsa seniors Daniel Wasson and Kyle Brown each scored one goal and the Golden Hurricane picked up its first Conference USA win with a 2-0 shutout victory over Central Florida at the Hurricane Soccer & Track Stadium.
Tulsa improved to 4-4-6 overall and 1-2-3 in C-USA games, while UCF dropped to 6-5-1 overall and 1-3-1 in league games. Tulsa redshirt freshman Tyrel Lacey logged his first career shutout in goal and the shutout was just the second for TU this season. The Hurricane also completed just its sixth game in regulation this season and picked up is first win of the month.
Both teams attempted six shots in the opening period, but it was Tulsa that made the most of its chances. The Golden Hurricane struck first when senior Lawson Vaughn played a thru ball to classmate Daniel Wasson near the top left side of the penalty box. Wasson, who had a defender draped on him, drilled a shot to the far left post to notch his third goal of the year and give TU a 1-0 lead at the 19:56 minute mark. Vaughn picked up the assist and the score remained 1-0 at halftime.
The Hurricane entered the game with a 2-0-2 record this season when scoring two or more goals. However, TU had only managed to score more than one goal in five of its last six games.
Tulsa came out of the second half and wasted little time tacking on its second score and putting the pressure on UCF. The Hurricane needed just 2:45 into the second period to find the back of the net for the second time today. Sophomore Eric Burkholder dribbled past his defender and into penalty box and slid a pass to senior Kyle Brown, who was standing 10 yards out in the middle of the box, and finished the play with a blast past Golden Knight goalkeeper Ryan McIntosh.
