Nov. 3, 2012
Tulsa, Oklahoma -
Cristian Mata and Omar Mata both tallied a goal to give the Tulsa men's soccer team a 2-1 win over FIU on Saturday night in Miami, Fla., in the final regular season game. TU moved to 11-5-1 on the season and 5-2-1 in Conference USA, while the Panthers fell to 8-8-2 overall and 0-7-1 in the league.
"I thought we gave away too many counter-attacks and we didn't do what we need to in the first half, but then in the second half we did a better job of not allowing them to counter attack and we created more chances," Head Coach Tom McIntosh said. "It was a very physical game and there wasn't a lot of flow, but in really adverse conditions we showed a lot of maturity and that was really good to see."
Colby Burdette put FIU on the board first as he scored off a combination from Daniel Gonzalez and Quentin Albrecht in the 38th minute to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead at the break.
Cristian evened the score in the 51st minute as he punched in a goal off an assist from Omar, and then Omar drilled in a penalty kick in the 80th minute for the game-winner.
Stephen Roberson had a team-best three shots, while Omar, Cristian and Kyle Cumings each had two attempts, and three others had one shot. Mark Pais logged all 90 minutes in goal and earned seven saves.
Tulsa had a 12-11 lead in shots, but FIU had an 8-7 advantage in shots on goal, and TU had a 7-6 lead in corner kicks.
Conference USA will release the C-USA Men's Soccer Championship bracket on Sunday.
