No. 14 Tulsa Men's Soccer to Host Exhibition Match Against SW Missouri State This Thursday
Aug. 23, 2005
Tulsa, Oklahoma - The 14th-ranked Tulsa Golden Hurricane men's soccer team will host former Missouri Valley Conference rival Southwest Missouri State in an exhibition match at 7:05 p.m. this Thursday at the Hurricane Soccer & Track Stadium. There will be no charge for admission.
Tulsa returns 15 letterwinners, including seven starters, and features an 11-member newcomer class for the 2005 campaign. The Golden Hurricane received a preseason national ranking by three different publications after advancing to last season's NCAA Tournament quarterfinals and concluding the year with a school-best No. 8 national ranking.
The senior class of Kyle Brown, Jamie Dabney, Lawson Vaughn, Daniel Wasson and Matt Wiley will look to lead the Golden Hurricane to a conference title during its inaugural season in Conference USA, and will attempt a third straight NCAA Tournament appearance.
Over the past 24 years, Tulsa and SMS met 34 times on the pitch and TU owns a 21-11-2 overall mark against the Bears. Tulsa ended Southwest Missouri State's season last year by knocking the Bears out of the MVC Tournament. Although Thursday's game is just an exhibition, the contest is significant for SMS. On Sunday, August 28, Southwest Missouri State will change its name to Missouri State University, so the TU game will mark its final athletic event under its current name.
TU opens its 25th season of men's soccer against inner-city rival Oral Roberts at the Hurricane Soccer & Track Stadium on Sept. 1 at 6:00 p.m. TU leads the overall series, 17-1. Tulsa and rival Oral Roberts first met on the soccer pitch during the Hurricane's inaugural season of men's soccer in 1980. Since that game, which was a 5-3 TU victory, the teams have met 18 times. However, the 2005 season marks the first time Tulsa has played ORU in a season opener.
Fans with a ticket stub from the TU-ORU contest will receive $2 off any ticket for the nationally televised Tulsa-Minnesota football game, which begins at 9:15 p.m. that same night.
