Irving, Texas - Cristian Mata and Mark Pais were named as the Conference USA Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, to sweep the league's weekly honors as announced today by the conference office.

"Getting a shutout against a good team was a great way to start league play, and this just adds to it," Head Coach Tom McIntosh said. "Mark played well on the day and he is starting to grow in his understanding with our group. Cristian, who scored a goal and had an assist, has been very productive for us. It is great to see two guys who work so hard get recognized for their work."

A freshman from Tulsa, Okla., Mata had four shots, three of which were on goal, the game-winning goal and an assist to lead Tulsa to a 4-0 win over South Carolina in the league opener last weekend. Mata's goal was shot from 10 yards out and was chipped over the keeper's head in the 24th minute. He now has a team-best six goals, one assist and a team-leading 13 points on the season. Mata ranks first in the league in goals, game-winners and points, and is seventh in shots.

Pais, a senior-transfer from St. Louis, Mo., logged all 90 minutes in goal and recorded three saves for a shutout over the Gamecocks. He has recorded 717:13 between the posts, picked up 25 saves and recorded three shutouts this season. Pais is third in shutouts, fourth in saves, seventh in goals-against average (1.38) and eighth in saves percentage (.694) among the league's best.
