Golden Hurricane Takes Down Shockers, 6-1

TULSA, Okla. - The No. 23-ranked University of Tulsa men's tennis team defeated Wichita State 6-1 Friday night inside Case Tennis Center.
The Golden Hurricane (3-5) swept the doubles point and took five of six singles matches from the Shockers (2-2).
The No. 3-ranked duo of senior Ashley Watling and junior Clifford Marsland made it a clean sweep after taking down No. 20 David Cavalcanti and Matheus Pereira 8-5 at the top of the lineup. The win was the fifth in a row for the Tulsa tandem.
Jackson was the first member of the Golden Hurricane off court during singles play, after he posted a 6-2, 6-3 win over Reyes from the fourth position.
No. 83 Watling took down Cavalcanti 6-1, 6-4 from the second court to give TU a 3-0 advantage. The win gave him 73 for his career, and he moved into a tie for 10th in school history for career singles victories (Ian Harris, 1992-96).
Wichita State was able to stave off defeat momentarily after Pereira, ranked 66th in the country, defeated sophomore Japie De Klerk 6-4, 6-1 on the top court.
Sanchez sealed the win for Tulsa after defeating Perez 6-2, 6-4 from the fourth position.
No. 88 Ive topped Gregurovic 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) on the third court and Gheorghe ended play with a 6-3, 6-7 (4-7), 1-0 (10-7) triumph over Estenssoro at five.
Next up for the Golden Hurricane will be a stiff home test against No. 11 Texas A&M. Tulsa will play host to the Aggies at 1 p.m. Feb. 12 at the Case Tennis Center.
