March 14, 2008
Montgomery, Ala. - The University of Tulsa men's tennis moved into the semifinals of the Blue / Gray Classic after defeating the No.30-ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish, 4-0, at the Lagoon Park Tennis Center in Montgomery, Ala. The eighth-ranked Golden Hurricane, 12-2, got revenge on Notre Dame after falling to them in the semifinals at last year's Blue / Gray Classic. Tomorrow, TU will face the No. 65 Penn State Nittany Lions in the semifinal round.
TU's match against the Fighting Irish was scheduled for 11:00 a.m., but because of rain was moved back to almost 1:00 p.m. Due to the rain delay, doubles would only be played if necessary.
In Tulsa's case the doubles competition was not necessary, winning the first four singles matches to clinch the duel. The Golden Hurricane got wins from No. 41 Arnau Brugues at the No. 1 position, Victor Kolik at the No. 3 position, Will Gray at the No. 4 position and Ross Cunningham at the No. 6 position. Brugues dispatched of No. 17 Brett Helgeson, 6-4, 6-3. Earlier this season Brugues fell to Brett's older brother, Travis, Georgia's No. 1 player. Freshman Kolik defeated Andrew Roth, 6-3, 7-5. Senior co-captain Gray beat Stephen Havens, 6-4, 6-2. Junior Cunningham pulled off the shutout with TU's fourth singles victory, downing Tyler Davis in three sets, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4. While, senior Alberto Sottocorno split the first two sets with Daniel Stahl, 4-6, 6-4, 3-3.
