No. 42 Men's Tennis Defeats Southern Miss 4-0 Friday to Advance to Semifinals of C-USA Championships

TULSA, Okla. - The No. 1 seed University of Tulsa men's tennis team defeated the No. 9 seed Southern Miss 4-0 on Friday in the quarterfinals of the Conference USA Men's Tennis Championships to advance to the semifinals to face No. 5 seed Rice on Saturday at noon at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.

The Golden Hurricane won the doubles point after wins from No. 27 Clifford Marsland and sophomore Dylan McCloskey 8-3 at the No. 1 position and from sophomore Matthew Kirby and freshman Or Ram-Harel 8-4 at the No. 3 position.

Freshman Daniel Santos won the first singles match with a 6-2, 6-0 win at the No. 6 singles position to give the Golden Hurricane a 2-0 lead.

No. 85 Marsland's 6-1, 6-1 win at the No. 2 singles position gave the Golden Hurricane a 3-0 lead and No. 81 Japie De Klerk's 6-0, 6-2 win at the No. 1 singles position gave Tulsa the 4-0 win.

Marsland's win was his 84th career singles wins which ties him for seventh most in school history with Layn Phillips from 1970-74.

The Golden Hurricane faces Rice (10-12), who defeated No. 4 seed Middle Tennessee (10-14) 4-1.

Earlier in the day, No. 67 Tulane (14-8), the No. 2 seed, defeated No. 7 seed UAB (13-9) 4-1 and No. 72 East Carolina (18-6), the No. 3 seed, defeated No. 6 seed Charlotte (13-7) 4-2. Tulane and East Carolina square off to face each other at noon on Saturday.

The championship match will be played at 11 a.m. on Sunday to determine this year's champion and automatic qualifier into the NCAA Championships.
