MIDLAND, Texas -
The University of Tulsa men's tennis team opened its fall campaign at the Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational on September 14-16.
The senior duo of Grant Ive and Tristan Jackson, who were the No. 1 seed in the tournament, advanced to the semifinals in the doubles competition after dispatching Tin Ostojic and Erick Reyes of Wichita State in the second round (8-6) and Raphael Pfister and Franciso Zambon of Texas Tech in the quarterfinals (8-5). The tandem would fall to Wichita State's Matheus Pereira and Alvaro Gutierrez in the semifinals by a count of 8-2. Pereira and Gutirrez went on to win the doubles title at the invite.
Ive won his first match in the second round in singles play rallying to defeat Victor Hoang of Arkansas, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3. Ive won the first set against Mads Hegulund of New Mexico in the round of 16, but dropped a 1-6, 6-2, 6-4 decision.
Freshman Matt Kirby, in his first collegiate match, lost to Nebraska's Dusty Boyer 6-4, 6-2 in the main bracket and fell to Tomislav Gregurovic of Wichita State in the consolation bracket.
The team will compete at the HEB Invitational, hosted by Baylor University, September 21-23 in Waco, Texas.
