De Klerk Moves On To Quarterfinals At ITA All-American Championships
Oct. 5, 2012
TULSA, Okla. - Junior Japie De Klerk, after defeating two top-50 foes in the ITA Preseason rankings yesterday, defeated No. 43 Soren Hess-Olesen of Texas 6-0, 6-2 on Friday, October 5, to earn a berth in the ITA All-American Championships quarterfinals at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center. De Klerk, ranked No. 73 in the nation, cruised through the first set and had a 4-0 lead in the second before Hess-Olesen rallied to make it 4-2, but De Klerk ultimately won the frame 6-2. "I started off pretty well," De Klerk commented. "I got an early break and I played smart tennis in the first set. In the second set, I got off to another solid start getting up 4-0. There was one point at 30-all that could have gone either way and I lost it so it broke me. Then I calmed my nerves and won the match." Yesterday, De Klerk defeated Florida's No. 17-ranked Bob Van Overbeek, 6-4, 6-1 in his opening match before taking down No. 26 Gonzales Austin of Vanderbilt 6-4, 7-6(8-6) to move on to the third round. Up next for De Klerk is a matchup with No. 10 KU Singh of Georgia, which will take place tomorrow. For all Tulsa men's tennis news and information, visit www.TulsaHurricane.com.
