TULSA, Okla. - Sophomore Grant Ive and the doubles team of junior Ashley Watling and sophomore Clifford Marsland both lost in the final round of qualifying Tuesday at the 2010 D'Novo/ITA Men's Tennis Championships at Case Tennis Center.
Watling/Marsland lost to Alberto Bautista and Colin Hoover of Texas A&M 9-8 (7-5). The Tulsa tandem jumped out to a 6-3 lead after recording an early break of service against the Aggies, but Texas A&M was able to break twice and had a chance to serve for the match at 7-6.
Tulsa would not go down without a fight, however, and broke back to even the score at 7-all. Both teams held, and a tiebreak was needed to decide which team would move into the Main Draw.
The Golden Hurricane doubles team, which was playing in its first tournament together, earned two early minibreaks and played to a 5-3 advantage. The Aggies were able to chip away until they reached match point at 6-5 on Watling's serve. After a quality serve from Watling, the usually steely Marsland sent a low volley into the net following a long rally, and Texas A&M was able to come out victorious in one of the most thrilling doubles matches of the afternoon.
Sophomore Grant Ive also fell just shy of his bid to qualify for the Main Singles Draw, losing 6-3, 6-1 to Sadio Doumbia of Georgia. Ive broke Doumbia twice in the opening set to take a quick 3-0 lead, but he could not maintain his momentum, losing the next six games.
He was broken four times in the second set and couldn't do any damage on the Doumbia serve, falling 6-1.
All three members of the Golden Hurricane will still see action in the Main Draw. Ive will team up with sophomore Alastair Barnes for some doubles action, and Marsland and Watling are set to do work in singles. Also joining them in singles is sophomore Marcelo Arevalo. Times for both draws will be announced later.
