Nov. 4, 2011
FLUSHING, N.Y. - Senior Ashley Watling and junior Clifford Marsland secured a spot in the semifinals of the 2011 USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Men's Doubles Championship after they won their quarterfinal match Friday morning at the USTA Billie Jean King Tennis Center.
The Tulsa tandem, seeded third in the tournament and ranked No. 4 in the nation, defeated the upset-minded Michigan pair of Shaun Bernstein and Evan King 8-6. The duo is ranked No. 33 in the NCAA.
"Ash and I were very pleased with our mental focus this morning," Marsland said. "We know we have a tough opponent from Florida tomorrow, but we will be ready for our semifinal match."
The doubles team will now face Nassim Slilam and Billy Federhofer in the semifinals Nov. 5, and the match time will be announced later today.
The Florida pair is ranked No. 36 in the country. They posted a colossal upset in their quarterfinal match as they disposed of the No. 1 team in the nation of Kevin King and Juan Spir (Georgia Tech) 9-7.
The opening rounds of the tournament are all eight-game pro sets, but the semifinals and finals will both be full three-set matches.
No tennis player from The University of Tulsa (men's or women's, singles or doubles) has ever advanced to the finals of the National Indoor Championships.
