IRVING, Texas - The University of Tulsa men's and women's teams swept the first Conference USA weekly award this spring season as Japie De Klerk and Samantha Vickers were named C-USA Men's and Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week respectively, announced by the league on Monday afternoon.

Senior men's tennis player De Klerk earned his fifth weekly award as he won three singles matches at the No. 1 position and won three doubles matches at the No. 2 position in doubles.

Senior women's tennis player Vickers earned her eighth weekly award as she recorded two wins at the No. 1 position in singles and two wins at the No. 1 position in doubles.

De Klerk won the second singles match over Ilija Cuic of Wichita State, 6-0, 6-1 in a 4-0 win over No. 61 Wichita State on Friday night.

The Ashton, South Africa native recorded his second win the of the weekend against Alen Salibasic of Drake, 6-1, 6-4 to give TU a 3-0 lead over No. 30 Drake as the Golden Hurricane won the match 4-1.

De Klerk won the fourth singles match against Jakub Eisner 6-3, 6-1 as TU won 6-1 over Illinois State.

De Klerk paired up with Alejandro Espejo to defeat WSU's doubles team of Guillermo Nicol/Guillermo de Vilchez 6-1 to clinch the doubles point.

With the doubles point tied at one, De Klerk and Espejo defeated Drake's doubles duo of Salibasic/Ben Lott 6-4 to give TU the doubles point.

De Klerk and Espejo won the first doubles match over Illinois State's duo of Jacob Wilson/Urh Kranjnc Domiter 6-2.

Vickers defeated Mayci Jones of BYU 6-3, 6-0 to clinch the match and give TU a 4-0 lead and then defeated Haley Martin of Oral Roberts 6-1, 6-1 to complete the sweep of Oral Roberts.

The Lincolnshire, England native is riding a nine-match winning streak and has moved into a tie for fourth most career singles wins in school history with 98. Vickers paired up with Isaura Enrique to win both doubles matches on Saturday at the No. 1 position. The duo won the first doubles match against BYU's Meghan Sheehan-Dizon/Toby Milclat 6-2 and finished the doubles match over ORU's Melanie Marlin/Marizanne Bouwer 6-1. Vickers and Enrique are riding a five-match winning streak.

 

 

Vickers moved up to seventh place in school history with 77 career doubles wins.

The men's and women's teams opens its 2014 road campaign with the ITA Kick-off Weekend on Jan. 25-26.

The men's team travels to Norman, Okla., to face Northwestern on Saturday at 2 p.m., followed by either Oklahoma or Virginia Tech on Sunday.

The women's team travels to Ann Arbor, Mich., to face Yale on Saturday at 2 p.m., followed by either Michigan or Virginia Tech on Sunday.
