Tulsa Sweeps Weekly C-USA Tennis Awards
Feb. 5, 2013
Tulsa earns both awards on the same day for the first time this season. The Golden Hurricane also swept the weekly laurels twice last year
Vickers led the Golden Hurricane to two victories over ranked opponents last weekend as the No. 124 singles player in the nation went 4-0. Vickers defeated Lucia Kovalova of Wichita State 6-2, 6-1 as TU defeated No. 64 Wichita State 6-1. Against No. 32 Rice, Vickers defeated No. 50 ranked Natalie Beazant 6-2, 6-0.
She teamed up with sophomore Isaura Enrique to win both doubles matches. The Tulsa tandem defeated Lucia Kovalova and Veronika Blaskova of WSU 8-2, and took down No. 56 Natalie Beazant and Dominque Harmath of Rice 8-3. Vickers and Enrique are ranked No. 9 in the nation and are a perfect 4-0 on the season.
"Sam is really starting to play well," commented women's Head Coach Dean Orford. "She will have a challenge this weekend against Petra Niedermayerova of Kansas State, who defeated her in the finals of the USTA/ITA Regionals this past fall. It's also been fun watching Sam develop into one of the nations premier doubles players along side her partner Isaura Enrique."
Marsland, playing No. 1 singles for the first time this year, picked up two wins as the Hurricane defeated No. 37 Minnesota and No. 14 Baylor. He dispatched No. 49 ranked Rok Bonin of Minnesota 6-7(4), 6-2, 6-2 as TU defeated the Golden Gophers 4-3. On Sunday against Baylor, Marsland defeated No. 60 ranked Mate Zsiga 6-4, 6-3 as the Hurricane took down the Bears 5-2.
In doubles play, Marsland teamed up with sophomore Alejandro Espejo at No. 1 doubles and defeated Minnesota's Mathieu Froment and Rok Bonin, ranked No. 24 in the nation, 8-5.
"Cliff is working really hard both in the class room and on the court," commented men's Head Coach Vince Westbrook. "He is a great leader for this squad and is reaping some of the fruits of his labor."
This marks Marsland's fifth weekly honor of his career, while Vickers has won the award four times, including three last year.
The TU women's team will play at Kansas State and Kansas on Saturday and Sunday, respectively, while the men will play at Oklahoma on Friday night before hosting TCU on Sunday. First serve from the Michael D. Case Tennis Center is set for 12 p.m. on Sunday.
