Tulsa Hosts Weekend Tilt Against Tulane, North Carolina State:
After playing seven-straight matches on the road, the Golden Hurricane (9-8) returns home this weekend with two matches against Tulane and North Carolina State.
On Friday, March 30, TU squares off against 43rd-ranked Tulane (7-7) at 4:00 p.m. at the Harwell Tennis Courts. A year ago in New Orleans, TU fell to the then 41st-ranked Green Wave, 4-2.
The following day, Saturday, March 31, Tulsa returns to the Harwell Courts against the North Carolina State Wolf Pack (6-5) at 1:00 p.m.
Monk Named WAC Player of the Week:
Tulsa junior Sean Monk (Las Vegas, Nev.) has been named the Western Athletic Conference men's tennis Player of the Week for matches played March 19-25.
For the week, Monk went undefeated in matches against New Mexico State and No. 37 UNLV on March 24 and 25, respectively, in Las Vegas.
Monk claimed a three-set decision over New Mexico State's Ludo Barthe. After dropping the first set, 1-6, Monk rallied to sweep the second and third sets, 6-3, 7-6. A day later, Monk faced a similar scenario, down 3-6 in the first only to storm back, 6-3, 6-2, to defeat Leslie Eisinga of UNLV.
McGregor Remains Among Nation's Top Singles Players:
In this week's WingspanBank.com Collegiate Tennis Rankings, Dane McGregor (Port Elizabeth, South Africa) is the 54th-ranked singles player in the country. McGregor broke into the national polls at No. 64 in the Feb. 24, 2001, edition of the WingspanBank.com Collegiate Tennis Rankings and was ranked as high as No. 39 on March 7. For the season, he is 18-5 overall, 14-1 in dual matches and 5-0 against nationally-ranked opponents.
Sudhakara, McGregor Ranked No. 30 Nationally:
Tulsa's top doubles team of juniors Dane McGregor and Shriranga Sudhakara (Bangalore, India) is ranked as the 30th-best doubles team in America. McGregor and Sudhakara are 13-6 overall in 2000-2001 and 11-3 during the spring season.
Sean Monk is 19-4 overall and 14-2 in dual action. He has won 10 of his last 11 matches and is tied with teammate Dane McGregor for the most dual wins this season (14). Five wins shy of breaking into the school's top-10 all-time career singles victories, Monk's 19 wins to date are a single-season career best.
Tulsa is ranked third among Region V teams in this week's ITA Regional rankings. Ahead of the Hurricane is Oklahoma State and Indiana State. Five TU players are ranked among the region's top-30 players, including junior Pawel Sebastyanski (Wroclaw, Poland) (#8), Dane McGregor (#10), Sean Monk (#22), sophomore Steve Timperley (Durban, South Africa) (#28) and Shriranga Sudhakara (#29).
Sean Monk leads Tulsa in singles wins with 19, while Dane McGregor and senior Micah Zomer (Tulsa, Okla.) are second, each with 18 victories.
Dane McGregor and Sean Monk have recorded a combined dual mark of 27-3 at the No. 2 and No. 6 positions, respectively.
