IRVING, Texas - The University of Tulsa men's tennis player Alejandro Espejo was named Conference USA Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week, announced by the league on Tuesday.

The junior defeated Sasha Gozun of No. 25 South Florida on Friday in straight sets 6-4, 7-5 to cut USF's lead to 2-1, but fell to No. 43 Dane Webb of No. 5 Oklahoma 6-4, 6-4 on Sunday at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.

The Granada, Spain native has posted an 18-8 record in singles this season, including a 14-4 record in dual competition and a 10-2 record at the No. 3 position. Espejo has posted a 1-1 record against nationally ranked opponents and a 5-3 record against regionally ranked opponents.

Espejo paired with senior Japie De Klerk and defeated No. 53 Oliver Pramming and Ignacio Gonzalez-Muniz 8-6 to tie the doubles point against USF and defeated No. 17 Dane Webb and Andrew Harris of OU 8-7 (6) to clinch the doubles point.

The duo entered the rankings to No. 59 in the International Tennis Association poll, released on Tuesday and has posted a 14-8 record this season, including a 12-7 record at the No. 2 doubles position. Espejo and De Klerk have posted a 5-0 record against nationally ranked opponents and a 6-0 record against regionally ranked opponents.

This is Espejo's fourth weekly award in his career, his third this season. This is the eighth time a Golden Hurricane has won the weekly award this season (De Klerk - Jan. 21, senior Clifford Marsland - Jan. 28, Feb. 11 and Feb. 18, Espejo - Feb. 4 and Feb. 25).

No. 41 Golden Hurricane (10-11) travels to Columbus, Ohio to face host No. 1 Ohio State (23-2) on Friday at 5 p.m. before returning home for a doubleheader on Sunday with Incarnate Word (13-4) at 10 a.m. and Oral Roberts (6-10) at 3 p.m. at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
