Tulsa's Brugues and Diaz-Barriga Named to the C-USA All-Academic TeamApril 15, 2009
Irving, Texas - The University of Tulsa's Arnau Brugues and Thalia Diaz-Barriga were selected to the 2009 Conference USA All-Academic Team as announced today by the league office. The teams consisted of six men and seven women student-athletes who earned at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average and are a regular participant on their team. Senior Arnau Brugues earned his third straight all-academic honor after graduating with a 3.67 GPA in exercise sports science. The Barcelona, Spain, native is currently working towards his masters in business administration. Brugues is the No. 1 ranked singles player in the nation by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, and has a 37-3 singles record on the season. He is a three-time Conference USA Player of the Year, the 2007 C-USA Tennis Scholar Athlete of the Year and a two-time ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VI First Team selection. Senior Thalia Diaz-Barriga makes her first appearance on the all-academic team after posting a 3.58 GPA in marketing and being named to the TU Dean's List this past fall. The Cordoba, Veracruz, Mexico native sits in second place on the school's all-time career doubles wins list with 86 career wins and in fourth place on the all-time career singles wins list with 81 career victories. Diaz-Barriga owns a 22-11 singles record this season, marking the third straight season that she has won 20 or more singles matches. The men's and women's tennis teams will look to defend their Conference USA Championships this weekend, with men playing on April 17-19 at UCF and the women playing on April 16-19 at Rice University.
