Marsland Moves Up Two Spots in Singles to No. 85 in ITA Poll

SKILLMAN, N.J. - Clifford Marsland, of the University of Tulsa men's tennis team, moved up two spots in the International Tennis Association poll from No. 87 to No. 85.

The senior went 2-0 at the No. 2 singles position last week and defeated No. 74 Herkko Pollanen of No. 1 Ohio State 6-2, 6-3 to cut the Buckeyes lead to 3-1. Marsland also defeated Leonard Ivic of Incarnate Word 6-1, 6-3 to give Tulsa a 2-0 lead.

On the season, Marsland has posted a 15-6 singles record, including a 13-5 record in dual competition and a 12-4 record at the No. 2 singles position.

Senior Japie De Klerk leads the Golden Hurricane with a No. 81 ranking as he went 2-1 last week at the No. 1 singles position. De Klerk won both of his matches on Sunday, a 6-4, 6-1 win against Oral Roberts and a 6-3, 6-2 win against Incarnate Word. De Klerk fell to No. 9 Peter Kobelt 6-1, 6-3 of Ohio State on Friday.

The Ashton, South Africa native has posted a 12-13 singles record this season, including an 11-9 record in dual competition and a 10-8 record at the No. 1 singles position.

The Golden Hurricane (12-12) also has a doubles team ranked with Marsland and sophomore Dylan McCloskey at No. 27. Marsland and McCloskey went 3-0 last week and has posted a 15-9 doubles record this season, including a 13-8 record at the No. 1 position.

The Golden Hurricane fell a spot as a team from No. 41 to No. 42 after going 2-1 last week. Tulsa fell to No. 1 Ohio State 4-3 on Friday in Columbus, Ohio, but won both matches on Sunday against Incarnate Word, 7-0, and Oral Roberts, 6-1.

The No. 1 seed Golden Hurricane hosts the 2014 Conference USA Men's Tennis Championships at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center. The championship starts on Thursday with three matches and finishes with the championship match on Sunday. Tulsa received a bye into the quarterfinals and faces the winner of No. 8 seed Old Dominion and No. 9 seed Southern Miss on Friday at 2 p.m.
