IRVING, Texas - Clifford Marsland became the first men's tennis athlete to be named to the Conference USA All-Academic Team for fours year, announced by the league on Wednesday.

"Clifford knows that someday his tennis career is going to be over and he has shown that, since he has been declared academic ineligible by the NCAA in first year here, he's been one of the top students in the conference since he's been here," TU head coach Vince Westbrook said. "He's a success story, not only on the court, but off the court and in the classroom. He's been a huge success story for us and we're as proud of that as we are with his accomplishments on the court."

The senior graduated with his degree of exercise and sports science with a GPA of 3.565 and is currently enrolled in graduate school with a GPA of 4.00 in education.

"It's a great privilege to win this award four times," Marsland said. "It's a great privilege to be the first person to achieve that. I couldn't have done it without the academic support at TU with Melissa Dawson, great professors and coaches that are flexible with scheduling."

The Perth, Australia native is a four-time C-USA Honor Roll member and a two-time ITA Scholar Athlete. He is also a three-time All-C-USA Singles first team honoree and has been named C-USA Player of the Week nine times, including four times this season.

On the season, Marsland has posted a 15-6 singles record, including a 13-5 record in dual competition and a 12-4 record at the No. 2 singles position.

The No. 1 seed Golden Hurricane hosts the 2014 Conference USA Men's Tennis Championships at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center. The championship starts on Thursday with three matches and finishes with the championship match on Sunday. Tulsa received a bye into the quarterfinals and faces the winner of No. 8 seed Old Dominion and No. 9 seed Southern Miss on Friday at 2 p.m.
