Tulsa Seeks Sixth C-USA Title Monday
April 22, 2012
ORLANDO -The No. 23-ranked University of Tulsa men's tennis team will be gunning for its unprecedented sixth Conference USA Championship at 8 a.m. (CT) April 23 at the UCF Tennis Complex.
The Golden Hurricane (17-8) will face No. 33-ranked and second seed Memphis (19-4) in the title match. Monday's championship match will mark the first time since TU joined the league in 2005-06 that the finals will not include both Tulsa and Rice. The Tigers eliminated the Owls 4-1 Sunday morning in the semifinals.
The Tigers own a 7-4 mark against ranked opponents this season. Wins have been over No. 13 Tennessee, No. 43 Vanderbilt, No. 47 Rice, No. 59 South Alabama, No. 63 Tulane, No. 65 UAB, and No. 70 Stetson. The only losses of the season Memphis has suffered have been to No. 22 Ole Miss, No. 49 UNC-Wilmington, No. 64 Rice, No. 71 Alabama
Tulsa has knocked out Memphis each of the last three years in the league tournament, which includes a 4-0 win in the 2009 quarterfinals on these same Orlando courts. The only player on either team who competed in that match is TU senior Ashley Watling. He posted a doubles victory and an unfinished singles match.
Tulsa will be attempting to break its tie with Tulane for the most C-USA Championships in league history. The six titles in seven years would also be the most dominant stretch in conference history.
The Golden Hurricane owns an all-time record of 19-1 (.950) at the Conference USA Championship.
