Men's Tennis Wraps Up 2014 Season

TULSA, Okla. - The University of Tulsa men's tennis team finished the 2014 season with a 16-13 record, ranked No. 36 in the final International Tennis Association poll and won the Conference USA Championship for the seventh time in nine seasons.

The Golden Hurricane defeated No. 27 Stanford 4-2 in the first round of the NCAA Championship after trailing 2-0, but lost to host No. 6 Baylor 4-1 in the second round.

Senior Clifford Marsland was named ITA Central Region Most Improved Senior of the Year and was named C-USA Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week four times this season. He also earned a spot on the C-USA All-Singles First Team and C-USA All-Doubles First Team.

 

 

The Perth, Australia native posted a 19-6 record this season, including a 17-5 record in dual competition and finished on a six-match winning streak. He also posted a 17-10 doubles record with Dylan McCloskey, including a 15-9 record at the No. 1 position.

No. 30 Marsland and McCloskey, who were named as the C-USA Outstanding Doubles Team of the Championship, fell in the round of 32 of the NCAA Doubles Championship 3-6, 7-6 (4), 6-1 to No. 14 Arjun Kadhe and Jakob Sude of Oklahoma State.

Junior Alejandro Espejo, who was named on the C-USA Singles Second Team and C-USA Doubles Second Team, led TU with a 21-8 record, including a 17-4 record in dual competition and a 13-2 record at the No. 3 position.

Senior Japie De Klerk, who was named on the C-USA Singles First Team and C-USA Doubles Second Team, went 13-13 this season, including a 12-9 record in dual competition.
