Tulsa, Oklahoma - The University of Tulsa men's tennis team will host the Region V ITA Mid-American Championships beginning this Friday at 8:00 a.m. and continuing through Monday, October 23. The matches , which are expected to last all day, will be played at the Tulsa Southern Tennis Club and the Philcrest Hills Tennis Club.

The field consists of individuals from all 19 schools in Region V. Those teams include Bradley, Colorado, Creighton, Drake, Evansville, Illinois State, Indiana State, Kansas, UMKC, Nebraska, Northern Iowa, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Oral Roberts, Saint Louis, Southern Illinois, SW Missouri State, Tulsa and Wichita State.

This weekend's championship marks the first time in its 30-year history that it is being played outside Wichita, Kan. Since its inception in 1970, Wichita State University has hosted the annual event.

The singles matches will be played in the best two out of three format, while the doubles matches will be played in a proset format. The singles and doubles finalists will automatically qualify for the 2001 National Indoor Championships in Seattle, Wash., Feb. 15-18.

A total of six Hurricane players will begin their quest for the Region V Singles title Friday morning at 8:00 a.m. TU also placed three doubles team in the men's open doubles. The junior tandem of Dane McGregor and Shri Sudhakara, and junior Sean Monk and senior Micah Zomer will get underway at 7:00 p.m., while the Hurricane duo of junior Pawel Sebastyanski and sophomore Steve Timperley will begin at 8:00 p.m. All of TU's matches will be played at the Tulsa Southern Tennis Club on Friday.

Thursday marked the qualifying rounds for men's singles.
