IRVING, Texas - Clifford Marsland earned his second-straight Conference USA Men's Tennis Athlete of the Month honor, the league announced today.

The junior member of the Tulsa men's tennis team paired with senior teammate Ashley Watling to claim the 2011 USTA/ITA Men's Doubles Central Region Championship Oct. 25.

The No. 4-ranked duo automatically qualified for the 2011 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships Nov. 3-6.

The top seed in the Central Region Championship rolled to the fourth title for a Tulsa doubles team in school history and the first since 2006.

They dropped Minnesota's No. 22-ranked tandem of Julian Dehn and Rok Bonin 8-2 in the semifinals. They claimed the title with a 9-7 triumph over No. 13 Benedikt Lindheim and Christopher Aumueller of Nebraska.

Marsland and Watling also reached the quarterfinals of the 2011 ITA All-American Championships in early October, taking down Georgia's No. 24-ranked team of Nathan Pasha and Hernus Pieters 8-2 in the process.

In singles action, Marsland reached the quarterfinals of the Central Region Championship, where he fell to eventual runner-up Anis Ghorbel of Drake.

Marsland competed in the main draw at the ITA All-American Championships, and he posted a 7-6 (8-6), 6-0 upset victory over No. 38 Brennan Boyajian of North Carolina in the consolation draw.

Two of Marsland's three singles losses in October came against highly-ranked opponents in No. 19 Finn Tearney of Pepperdine and No. 49 Chris Mengel of Duke.

Marsland is currently ranked No. 51 in the nation, which is his best-career singles ranking. This is just the second time in school history a member of the Tulsa men's tennis team earned back-to-back monthly honors (Arnau Brugues, 2008).

Other current members of the TU men's tennis team to earn a monthly honor are Watling (October 2009) and junior Marcelo Arevalo (October 2010).
