Tulsa's Ashley Watling Named Conference USA Player of the Month

Irving, Texas - Tulsa sophomore Ashley Watling was named Conference USA Men's Tennis Player of the Month, as announced today by the conference office. Watling posted a 5-2 singles record over the past month, including a pair of wins over nationally-ranked opponents.
The Ipswich, England, native advanced to the quarterfinals of the D'Novo ITA All-American Tennis Championships with a 3-1 record for the tournament. Watling defeated 53rd-ranked James Meredith of Boise State and 78th-ranked Mihai Nichifor of Columbia, before losing to eventual champion John Patrick Smith of Tennessee in the quarterfinals.
He also advanced to the round of 16 in singles at the Wilson/ITA Central Region Championships with a 2-1 record.
Watling and doubles partner Philip Stephens earned a 4-3 doubles record this past month, including a run into the finals of the Wilson/ITA Central Region Championships. The duo went 4-1 for the tournament, falling to Oklahoma State's Oleksandr Nedovyesov and Aleksey Bessonov, 8-6, in the finals. The Oklahoma State team finished second at the D'Novo ITA All-American Championships earlier in the month.
The Tulsa men's tennis team begins the duel season on January 14th against Oral Roberts at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
