Brugues Advances to Second Round in Singles at ITA National Indoor Championships

Charlottesville, Va. - Arnau Brugues defeated Michael Shabaz of Virginia, 7-6(5), 6-2, in the first round of Main Draw singles on Thursday at the ITA National Indoor Championships in Charlottesville, Va. The No. 6-ranked Brugues will face LSU's 20th-ranked Michael Venus on Friday for a shot to move into the quarterfinals.
In the first round of doubles, Brugues and partner Philip Stephens defeated third-seeded Jamie Hunt and Nate Schnugg of Georgia, 8-5. The win moves their doubles record to 5-1 on the season, including a 4-1 mark against ranked opponents.
It is the second time this season Brugues and Stephens have defeated the 8th-ranked Georgia pair. Their first win came in the second round of Main Draw doubles at the D'Novo ITA All-American Championships on Oct. 10.
Stephens and Brugues will face Louisville's Austen Childs and Simon Childs in the quarterfinals tomorrow morning. Childs and Childs defeated Raony Carvalho and Christian Rojmar of Texas Tech, 8-5, in the first round. The Louisville duo is ranked 26th in the country, and owns a 13-1 record this season.
Play continues tomorrow from the Boar's Head Sports Club with two rounds of Main Draw singles and one round of Main Draw doubles, and the first round of consolation singles and doubles.
