De Klerk Earns Conference USA Athlete Of The Month Honors

IRVING, Texas - Junior Japie De Klerk was named the Conference USA Men's Tennis Athlete of the Month for the month of October, the league announced today.
De Klerk was a quarterfinalist at the ITA All-American Championships, which earned him a spot in the STA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships Nov. 8-11 in Flushing, N.Y.
"He is playing very well this fall," commented Head Coach Vince Westbrook. "I think he is one of the best indoor players in the country. The changes he has made in his game are starting to work and the best is yet to come for Japie."
De Klerk defeated three top-50 players en route to advancing to the quarterfinals.
In the first round, he defeated No. 17 Bob van Overbeek of Florida, 6-4, 6-1. The second round saw a 6-4, 7-6(6) victory over No. 26 Gonzalez Austin of Vanderbilt. The Tulsa junior then went on to eliminate Texas' Soren Hess-Olesen 6-0, 6-2, who is ranked No. 42. In the quarterfinals, De Klerk went up against No. 10 KU Singh of Georgia and went three sets with the Bulldog before losing a 6-2, 2-6, 7-6(5) affair.
