Darlean Calip begins her second season as an assistant coach for the Golden Hurricane in 2004-05. Calip, 39, brings 14 years of basketball experience as a player, assistant coach or head coach on both the collegiate and high school levels to the Tulsa program. Her responsibilities include opponent scouting, pre- and post-season workouts with guards, overseeing team travel, and serving as the liaison for TU women's basketball community service and student affairs. Calip is also the director of summer camp sessions for women's basketball. During her first season at Tulsa in 2003-04, she helped TU to its best season in school history with a 19-12 overall record and its first-ever postseason appearance in the WNIT. She came to TU after spending three seasons as the head girl's basketball coach at Jenks (Okla.) High School. She led the Lady Trojans to two 6A state championships (2001, 2003) and one state runner-up finish in 2002. During her tenure, Jenks also captured three straight regional titles (2001-03), two area championships (2001, 2002) and an area consolation title (2003). Calip concluded her prep coaching career at Jenks with a three-year record of 69-14 and produced three Division I basketball players. In 2002-03, she coached the Oklahoma-Texas Oil Bowl, was named the Oklahoma Coaches Association all-state coach and the Tulsa World's Oklahoma and Northeast Region Co-Coach of the Year. Two seasons ago, she was named the Oklahoma Girl's Basketball Association Large School At-Large all-state coach, the Tulsa World Metro Co-Coach of the Year and the Frontier Coach of the Year in 2001-02. In her first campaign with the Trojans, she was selected as the Northeast Region Coach of the Year and the Tulsa World Metro and Frontier Conference Co-Coach of the Year. Prior to Jenks, Calip was the head girl's basketball coach and physical education instructor at Denton (Texas) High School from 1999-2000. Before that, she spent three seasons as the head girl's basketball coach at Moore (Okla.) High School and led her team to a 6A state runner-up finish in 1997-98. The team finished with a 16-12 overall record and also claimed a regional title and an area consolation championship. She began her coaching career with high school basketball in 1993 when she was hired as the assistant coach at Westmoore (Okla.) High School and served in that capacity from 1993-95. A native of Okemah, Oklahoma, Calip earned her bachelor's degree in physical education and sports medicine from East Central University in 1990, and completed her master's degree in secondary education from ECU in 1995. After graduating from college, she returned to her alma mater as the assistant women's basketball coach from 1990-93. Calip and her husband, Brad, reside in Jenks with their two children: Braden (10) and Brice (6). Her husband, who was an NAIA All-American at East Central, was a 2003 inductee into the College Football Hall of Fame. |
