In her third season as an assistant coach for the Tulsa women's basketball program is LaTricia Gunnells. She is responsible for the guard position, scouting and is the recruiting coordinator.
Gunnells helped Tulsa achieve new heights, as she played a key role in helping the Hurricane win Conference USA regular season and tournament titles in 2006. In addition, Tulsa advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament in TU's first-ever appearance in 2006. Under Gunnells' tutelage, former guard Kara Pongonis-Paslay was named to the C-USA third team and dished out a school-record 168 assists in 2005-06.
Gunnells, 32, came to Tulsa after spending two seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Central Florida. During her stint at UCF, she helped the Golden Knights post a two-year overall mark of 36-23 and back-to-back regular season Atlantic Sun Conference titles with a combined record of 30-10.
A native of Detroit, Mich., Gunnells served as an assistant women's basketball coach at Lehman College in the New York City area, where she was responsible for player development, on-court coaching, life skills and academic support.
Gunnells began her basketball career at Detroit's Murray-Wright High School. Upon graduation, she enrolled at Lansing Community College, where she both played and served as a student coach from 1993-96.
In the fall of 1996, Gunnells transferred to St. John's University where she continued her playing career under then head coach Charlene Thomas-Swinson. She served as the team captain from 1996-98, received the Best Defender award in 1996-97 and was voted the most improved player in 1997-98. After exhausting her eligibility in 1998, she stayed with the team as an undergraduate assistant coach. She also spent three years as a camp counselor and coach with the Inner-City Games during that time.
A 1999 graduate of St. John's University, Gunnells earned her bachelor's degree in communication.
Gunnells serves as guardian of her two younger siblings: Bre'huna (14) and Aaron (10), and is a part of Big Brothers Big Sisters.
