Nov. 6, 2010
Tulsa, Okla. -
Sophomore Taleya Mayberry scored 26 points and four different members of The University of Tulsa women's basketball team reached double figures as the Golden Hurricane easily dispatched of Cameron University 76-52 in the first exhibition game of the season Saturday evening in Donald W. Reynolds Center.
TU shot 42 percent from the field, which included a 7-of-14 effort from beyond the three-point line, and the Golden Hurricane outrebounded the Aggies 45-38.
Cameron also committed 35 turnovers, and Tulsa collected 26 steals in the winning effort.
Mayberry finished 12-for-15 from the field and added to her game-high 26 points with five assists, four rebounds and an astonishing eight steals in a game-high 30 minutes of action.
Freshman Loren McDaniel had an excellent first outing with a 17-point, eight-rebound performance to lead TU in the paint. Fellow freshman Amanda Mason came off the bench to drop 15 points, and senior Tatum Beer connected on three treys and scored 11.
Cameron maintained a slim advantage throughout the early going, but a Mayberry layup with 10:34 to play in the opening half gave TU an 18-17 lead, which turned out to be an advantage the home team would never again relinquish.
Senior Kensey Hall, McDaniel and Mason helped power Tulsa with an 8-0 run to push the lead to 24-17, and the Golden Hurricane cruised to a 38-27 halftime advantage.
TU forced a whopping 20 Cameron turnovers in the opening half and also recorded 15 steals. The Aggies had as many turnovers as shot attempts in the first 20 minutes.
Tulsa came out for the second half and continued to increase its lead. The advantage for the home blue and gold swelled to as many as 26 points as the Golden Hurricane looked strong in its first game of the 2010-11 campaign.
TU will kick off the regular season against defending D-II national champion Emporia State. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. Nov. 13 inside the Reynolds Center.
