TU Women's Hoops Team Dispatches Cameron In Exhibition Play, 84-59

Tulsa, Oklahoma - Senior Candice Brewer led five Golden Hurricane players into double figures with a game-high 23 points to lead Tulsa to an 84-59 victory over Cameron University in exhibition play at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
Tulsa jumped out on Cameron early in the game, ripping off a 14-0 run to begin the contest, and never looked back. Brewer sparked the Hurricane with 16 first-half points, while sophomore Kara Pongonis nailed all three of her three-point attempts in the opening period. The Hurricane opened up a 19-point advantage with just seven minutes gone by, and led by 25 points, 50-25, at intermission.
TU hit 17-of-32 field goal attempts for 53.1 percent in the first half, while a stingy Hurricane defense limited the Lady Aggies to just eight field goals (8-31) and Cameron shot 25.8 percent. Tulsa also sizzled from behind the arc, connecting on 6-of-11 attempts for 54.5 percent. The Golden Hurricane held a narrow, 23-20 advantage in rebounds.
Cameron fought back early in the second half, and outscored Tulsa 16-4 during the first eight minutes to cut the deficit to 13 points at the 13:16 mark. But Tulsa responded quickly when freshman Jillian Robbins hit a lay-up and sparked a 16-3 run that pushed TU's lead to 26 points with 8:45 remaining in the contest. TU build its largest lead of 27 points with 2:22 remaining.
TU shot 43.5 percent for the game, including 40.9 percent from beyond the three-point line. Cameron shot 32.3 percent for the game and was outrebounded by the Golden Hurricane, 46-40.
Along with her 23 points, Brewer tied Pongonis for game-high assist honors with six apiece. Robbins and sophomore Megan Moody each finished with 12 points and seven rebounds each, while Pongonis tallied with 11 points. Junior Becky Heidotten was the fifth TU player to reach double figures with 10 points. Junior Sarah Lundberg grabbed a game-best 10 rebounds.
Brittany Cooksey was the scoring leader for Cameron with 16 points, while Danelle Ladd was the only other Lady Aggie to record double figures with 11 points. Melisa Steen collected a team-high nine rebounds in the loss.
