Nov. 17, 2011
Fort Collins, Colo. - Four Tulsa women's basketball players scored in double digits, but it wasn't enough as the Golden Hurricane dropped an 87-68 decision to Colorado State on Thursday night at Moby Arena in Fort Collins, Colo. TU fell to 0-3 on the season, while CSU moved to 1-2 overall.
"I am disappointed with the way we came out in the second half," Head Coach Matilda Mossman said. "We played well in the first half and were within three at the half, but we just didn't compete at the beginning of the second half. We got down on ourselves, we were leaving too many things open and I didn't think we competed very hard, which is what I am most disappointed with."
Taleya Mayberry had a team-leading 17 points, followed by Taylor Hooker and Jessica McQuin with 11 apiece, while Chanice Scott had 10 points. Tiffani Couisnard and Denise Lewis each had four rebounds, while Couisnard also had three steals.
Tulsa shot 35-percent from the field, 29-percent from three-point range and 68-percent from the charity stripe.
With two tied scores and six lead changes, the first half was tightly contested as the Rams had a narrow 43-40 lead at the break. Mayberry and Hooker each had double-digit points at the break with 13 and 11 respectively, while the Golden Hurricane also had an 8-1 lead in steals.
The Rams came out ready to play in the second half, going on a 20-4 run in 7:49 off the clock and took a game-high 27-point lead with just 3:50 left in the contest. The Golden Hurricane couldn't overcome the deficit for the final 87-68 decision.
The Rams were led by Kim Mestdagh with 35 points, including seven three-point baskets, while Meghan Heimstra had 12 points and Sam Martin added 11. Heimstra also had 13 rebounds for a double-double.
CSU shot 55-percent from the field, 55-percent from behind the arc and 85-percent from the free throw line.
Tulsa will return to action on Wednesday, November 23rd against Arkansas State. Game time is set for 7:00 pm at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
