Nov. 21, 2001
Kalamazoo, Michigan - Tulsa sophomore Candice Brewer's running jumper with :07 seconds remaining in the game broke a 59-59 tie and gave the Golden Hurricane to a 62-59 victory over Western Michigan at University Arena in Kalamazoo, Michigan
Tulsa (1-2) and Western Michigan (1-2) were knotted up, 59-59, after Western Michigan's Kristin Koetsier connected on the first of two free throw attempts, but her second shot rattled off. TU gained possession and after a Bronco timeout, the Hurricane held the ball for 25 seconds before Brewer began to drive to the right. But in an instant, Brewer crossed over to her left and dribbled down the middle of the lane and lofted a soft shot that bounced once on the left side of the rim and fell through. Brewer was fouled on the drive and converted the free throw attempt for the three-point play and gave Tulsa a three-point cushion with seven ticks on the clock.
Western Michigan drove the length of the floor and attempted a three-point shot from the right elbow, but the ball sailed over the rim and bounced off the left side of the backboard.
Tulsa began its rally with 3:42 to play and down by six points, 56-50. Brewer, who earlier in the second half was helped off the court after being hit in the throat, reentered the game and was fouled. Brewer sank one of two free throws and trailed by five points. After a Bronco foul, TU senior Carla Morrow connected on back-to-back free throws to pull the Hurricane to within a point, Morrow then nailed a short jumper from just inside the right side to give Tulsa a 59-58 advantage with 2:06 showing on the clock. However, Koetsier, who finished with a game-high 20 points, hit a lay-up to put the Broncos back in front, 59-58. Tulsa junior Alyssa Shriver then gave TU a 59-58 lead on the ensuing possession when she sank a shot from just above the free-throw line.
Led by Carla Morrow's 16 points, a total of four Hurricane finished in double figures. Shriver finished with 12 points, five rebounds and tallied three blocked shots late in the game to thwart several WMU possessions. Brewer was 3-of-4 from the field and 4-of-5 from the free-throw line for 10 points. She also dished-out a game-high four assists. Sophomore Becky Heidotten came off the bench to add 10 points. Morrow led the Hurricane in rebounding with 13 boards and helped Tulsa to a 41-37 rebounding advantage.
Including Koetsier, three Broncos reached double figures in scoring. Karen Deurloo and Casey Rost finished with 13 points apiece, while Koetsier was the team's top rebounder with nine boards.
The first half featured six ties, but just two lead changes. Western Michigan ran out to its largest lead of the game, 17-8, with 10:38 to play in the opening period. TU used a 6-0 run to pull within three points and got as close as a bucket on four occasions before tying the game just before the half.
