April 2, 2013
Irving, Texas - Conference USA Commissioner Britton Banowsky announced the 12 student-athletes who received the C-USA Winter Spirit of Service awards, and Tulsa's honoree was senior women's basketball player Taleya Mayberry.
The C-USA Spirit of Service Award is designed to recognize the community service efforts of the league's student-athletes, based upon significant community service, good academic standing and participation in their elected sport. The Spirit of Service award is presented three times throughout the season, with these honorees representing Conference USA's winter sports: men's and women's basketball, women's swimming and diving and men's and women's indoor track and field.
Mayberry led the Tulsa attack with team-bests of 18.7 points per game, 120 assists and 79 steals, while also adding 4.1 rebounds per contest and four blocks on the season. She ranked second in points (616), third in points per game, field goals made (202) and free throws made (167), and sixth in assists on the Tulsa Single Season Chart. Mayberry picked up All-C-USA First Team, All-Tournament Team and Tournament MVP accolades this year.
Off the court, Mayberry maintains a 3.1 GPA in business management and will graduate in May. She also volunteered for various community service projects throughout the year, including the Salvation Army Angel Tree, Night Light at TU, Holiday Dinner for the Center for Individuals with Physical Challenges and the United Methodist Church Food Bank, to name a few.
