Oct. 16, 2008
Memphis, Tennessee - Conference USA basketball coaches convened on the FedEx Forum on Thursday afternoon for the annual C-USA Basketball Media Blitz. A day earlier, the Tulsa women were selected to finish the league race in seventh-place in the preseason coaches poll.
Tulsa Head Coach Charlene Thomas-Swinson is excited for practice to begin on Friday.
"I'm really excited about the start of the season. This is the biggest group that I've had the opportunity to coach with 14 scholarship players. We have one returning senior in Chanel Johnson. We have four juniors, three sophomores and five freshmen. We're really excited with the 14 players and eight being returning players," said Thomas-Swinson. "We'll look for Larrissa Williams, with the experience she gained last year, and Chanel, who played alongside her in the post, to provide leadership for us. Our sophomores were able to get a great bit of experience last year in a lot of different situations. Hopefully, we'll learn from that experience and be able to get off the ground running this year."
The Hurricane returns eight letterwinners and all five starters from last year's squad. Junior Larrissa Williams was recently named to the C-USA preseason al-conference team as selected by the league's coaches. The 6'3" Williams averaged 14.4 points and 9.5 rebounds lasat year, while totaling 13 double-doubles.
Tulsa's lone senior Chanel Johnson gives the Hurricane two of Conference USA's top post players. Johnson scored at a 10.7 clip last season, while pulling down 6.6 rebounds. The other three returning starters are sophomores Tatum Beer, ReShawndra Jackson and Kara Vaughn.
Thomas-Swinson, as many of the other C-USA coaches is excited about the prospects for Conference USA schools in 2008-09. "This is an exciting time for our conference. We know all the teams and looking at the rosters, we're all in the same situation where all of us do have a lot of returning players. Our teams have depth, are young and athletic. We're looking forward to great basketball in Conference USA," said Thomas-Swinson.
Tulsa begins practice on Friday night.
